Snell Isle

Snell Isle is a neighborhood in St. Petersburg, Florida that centers on Snell Isle Boulevard.  Situated at the northern end of the Old Northeast neighborhood, Snell Isle is an upscale residential neighborhood that was originally developed in the 1920s by C. Perry Snell, a druggist who moved to St. Petersburg in the early 1900s.  Aside from the numerous Luxury homes and condominiums, Snell Isle also is the residence of the Renaissance Vinoy Golf Club and Resort (1926) and the St. Petersburg Woman’s Club .

Local developer C. Perry Snell (1869-1942), was a Kentucky druggist who moved to St. Petersburg on the west coast of Florida in 1900.  Shortly after his arrival, Snell started to develop upscale commercial and residential neighborhoods and created the Snell Isle neighborhood in the mid to late 1920s.  When the development officially opened in October 1925, only 39 of its 275 acres were above the high tide line.

In 1926, Snell also opened on Snell Isle what is now called the Renaissance Vinoy Golf Club and Resort, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A memorial is dedicated to him in Snell Isle Park.  Snell Isle is also home to St. Petersburg Woman's Club. C. Perry Snell built the Women's Club on Coffee Pot Bayou to give a location to what he considered the city's strongest and most important organization.
